DESPONDENCY – HALLUCINOGENIC MADNESS FROM THE GERMAN LABYRINTHS OF PSYCHOPHAGY!!! You must definitely remember this name! It may have been a long time ago, but the German band for which Mr. Deather drew the iconic cover art for the album "God on Acid" gave rise to the legend of European brutal death metal led by the incredible master of gutturals, Konni, who from time to time sells his sick vocal cords to other greats to perfect the true morbidity (ex Mastication of Brutality Uncontrolled, Resection, ex-Gallery of Darkness, ex-Defeated Sanity, ex-Funeral Procession, ex-Precognitive Holocaust Annotations, ex-Revulsed, ex-Suffocate Bastard (live), ex-Lethality (live).
Thanks to the aforementioned album, the band made it to the OEF boards in 2004. Since then things have been happening both on a line-up level and in terms of progress within the genre, whose boundaries they have helped to push back with their recent album "Matriphagy". They will be performing this work of destruction and, of course, their old tracks live this summer, and we are already looking forward to it. How about you? It's going to be a killer show!!!
Bio
Despondency was founded in the spring of 1999 by Dirk Janssen (Drums), Stefen Ilm (Guitar), Konstantin Luhring (Vocals) and Heiko Lewin (Bass)
In 2001 with the addition of Mike Ernst, the band releases their first EP, Exctinction and in 2002 they release their Womb of Shit demo, which placed as a top band in Europe.
In 2003, they release their debut album God on Acid. The album’s success takes them to Obscene Extreme 2004 and various European concert runs.
In 2007, Heiko Lewin and Stephen Ilm leave the band. Patrick Viol (Bass) and Jelle Hamstra (Guitar) complete the lineup. That same year Supreme Misanthropic Brutality EP is released and Despondency plays Deathfeast Open Air 2007 and Way of Darkness 2008.
In 2009, Jelle leaves the band and now as a 4 piece, they release their sophomore album, Revelations IV (Rise of the Nemesis) playing in festivals like Neurotic Deathfest 2009 and Gothenburg Deatfest 2009. Shortly after Dirk Janssen and Patrick Viol leave and the band goes on a 5 year hiatus.
Despondency returns in 2015 but only until 2019 and with the addition of Remo Hoffman (Drums) and Florian Mayer (Bass), they release the EP Excruciating Metamorphosis. Few concerts happen during this time period, such as Holsteiner Deathfest 2016, NRW Deathfest 2018 and Chicago Domination Fest 2019.
During COVID, the band focuses on finishing their third studio album. However, in 2022, Mike Ernst leaves the band. That same year Eduardo Camargo (Guitar/ Bass) joins and in 2024, once again as a 4 piece, they release Matriphagy.
Keiran Allen (Bass) then joins the band to complete the lineup and Despondency performs at Hymns of Decay fest 2024, Steinbock Deathfest 2025 and Berlin Desecration Fest 2025.
Despondency shows off a “Golden Era” Brutal Death Metal sound with a unique style. For fans of: Defeated Sanity, Severe Torture, Pyaemia, Disavowed, etc…
