MARTIN SCHIRENC INTERVIEW
04.06.2015
Viva laMuerte! Vienna has a strange relation with death. They sing about death, play with it and build macabre monuments around it. That fascinating relation is maybe the key of Pungent Stench’s dark humor, something unique that you can’t find in other bands as good as they do.
Their approach to death and bizarre sexual fantasies
around it are reflected in their album covers.
Their monumental songs made a cult of fans around it. So naturally their
disbandment was a tragic loss for extreme music fans.
But surrender was never an option for their
guitarist Martin Schirenc, who fought a good fight to bring back the old classic
Pungent Stench tunes to the stages worldwide.
After the huge comeback as Schirenc Plays
Pungent Stench, they take by assault festivals as Eindhoven, Graspop, Hellfest,
Brutal Assault, Neurotic Deathfest, Maryland Deathfest and the cruise fest
70.000 Tons Of Metal. So they have only one fest to show what they are made of:
Obscene Extreme 2015.
We couldn’t miss the opportunity to have a
small chat with Martin to make the wait less painful. So please pick your
favorite Pungent Stench album and read this as you listen their sick music.
The live footage of Pungent Stench is really
cool (please see the Graspop video to confirm this) This new guys are doing
their job really well! It was difficult to find them when you were trying to
reform PS?
Thank you -
I'm glad you're digging it! I was very careful with picking out the new line
up, since I wanted the music to sound authentic and I'm pretty happy with the
result. I've been playing with Mike, our drummer, for many years in all kinds
of musical project and he's been in Hollenthon since 1998, so he was an obvious
choice for me, because we play together very well. He's also been a long-time
Pungent Stench fan, so he knew the songs inside out, even before we started
rehearsing. The bass slot was a bit harder to fill, since all former Pungent
Stench bass players basically retired form being active musicians, so I had to
look for a new man. Luckily, Danne from Genocide SS/The Accidents has moved to
Vienna and so I asked him if he wanted the job. He's also been into Pungent
Stench, back in the days, so he was immediately on board. It's working out like
a charm and to me, these song have never sounded better!
You have many difficulties to bring back
Pungent Stench sound live again. Have you ever thought to throw the towel in
some point?
Yeah, the
whole thing was a bit of a drag, but giving up was never an option for me.
Pungent Stench is my passion and I should have gone through with this, way
sooner!
Do you have any objectives with this new
Pungent Stench encarnation, or it's just for fun?
It's a
mission: Keeping the flame burning and bringing the music of Pungent Stench to
the stages all over the world! I will continue doing this, as long as people
want to see us play and so far, the response is great!
The question everyone is asking: can we expect
Schirenc Plays new Pungent Stench material?
The label
"Schirenc Plays Pungent Stench is pretty explicit": We play Pungent
Stench songs and everything else wouldn't fit the description.
Do you enjoy austrian extreme scene? Could you
name us some bands to recommend?
Most people
will be familiar with "Belphegor" and many should know
"Abigor" and "Summoning" (if not, check them out!). There's
also "Our Survival Depends On Us", "Absorber",
"Anstalt" and "Indoctrinate", which I can recommend and
probably many more I can't think of right now. I'm a bit out of the loop, I
gotta admit and therefore probably the wrong person to ask.
I read in an old interview that chicks were
trying to rip your pants off and so on when you were playing. Is this normal in
your bands? Is still happening?
That's a
thing of the past - now they're begging me to keep my shirt on, haha!
This is your space to say what you want to fans
and readers.
Thanks for
the interview and a big salute to all the old and new Pungent Stench fans who
are giving us a chance, because we're only doing this for you!
Thanks Martin for the interview!
